Starting ABA Therapy
Applied Behaviour Analysis therapy, or ABA therapy, is an evidence-based option that can help your autistic child learn new skills and feel more confident in their daily lives. It is based on understanding how children learn and what supports are needed to help them thrive. ABA therapy can help children be successful across settings, including in the home, at school, and in the community. ABA therapy can include home-based service or school-based service or a combination of both.
Every child is unique. Therefore, it will take time for you and your ABA team to work together to learn what will work best for your child. As you journey through the process of having an ABA therapy support plan and program developed, don't be afraid to ask questions and voice any worries you may have to your ABA team. You know your child best, and your input is a vital component of the process.
When you first meet with your ABA team, you'll talk about the things you would like to focus on for your child. You'll work together with your Behaviour Analyst to establish initial goals. The goals will be those that are the most important for your child and family, and will allow for measurable progress. You will connect regularly with your ABA team to discuss your child's progress and any changing needs over time. As your child grows and develops, you'll likely have new concerns and new goals to discuss. You'll work with your ABA therapy team to ensure that these new areas are added to your ABA support plan.
