FINDING Help

A Checklist For Finding
SUPPORT For a Child with Autism

As the parent of an autistic child, you know how crucial it is to find services that will have a positive outcome. When you search for autism support in Ontario, it can be hard to know which service providers have the skills and experience necessary to help your child succeed. As you look through service options, use this checklist to help you decide which autism service providers will best meet the needs of your child and family.

* Check to see what experience and credentials the service provider has, and how long they have been providing the service to children with autism. Choose professionals who have the necessary credentials and extensive experience with autistic children. Under the Ontario Autism Program, professionals must be Registered Behaviour Analysts in Ontario - RBA Ont.

* Research the type of treatment or support being offered. You want to select an agency or individual that uses a research-based treatment or approach that has evidence demonstrating that it is effective for children with autism.

* If you are unsure about how to proceed, connect with service providers that provide a complimentary consultation for you and your child without requiring a commitment to service. Choosing a support team is a process, and you'll want to make sure that you feel comfortable and confident about the professionals you choose.
