Frequently Asked Questions

If you are just starting to explore support for your autistic child we’re here to help.

Getting Started

  • ABA therapy can support children with a wide range of strengths and needs, particularly in areas like communication, social interaction, daily routines, and behaviour. If your child has an autism diagnosis or you have concerns about their development, an initial consultation can help determine if this approach is appropriate and what support could look like.

  • Families do not need a formal diagnosis to use our services. However, a formal autism diagnosis is required to access funding through the Ontario Autism Program. If you are still in the process of seeking a diagnosis, guidance can be provided on next steps. ABA therapy can begin anytime you are ready.

  • The process begins with an initial consultation to learn more about your child, your goals, and your family’s needs.

From there, we sign a service agreement. We go through a number of assessments and interviews to identify priority goals for service.

Then we develop a personalized ABA therapy support plan, and sessions are scheduled at times that work for you.

Services & Approach

  • Sessions take place in your child’s natural environment, using familiar routines, spaces, and activities. This helps your child feel more at ease and allows skills to be practiced where they are used every day, such as during playtime, mealtimes, or transitions.

  • Programs are tailored to each child.

They can include communication, social skills, emotional regulation, independence, and daily living skills.

The goal is to build meaningful abilities that support your child’s participation in everyday life.

  • Sessions are designed to be engaging and aligned with your child’s interests.

When developmentally appropriate, play is can be used as a way to build connections, teach new skills, and encourage participation.

  • Progress is tracked through ongoing data collection and observation. This allows programs to be adjusted as your child grows and ensures that goals remain relevant and achievable.

Parent Involvement

  • Parent involvement is an important part of the process. You will receive guidance, strategies, and updates so you can support your child’s progress outside of sessions.

  • Yes, parent coaching is available.

We’re here to help you feel confident in supporting your child’s needs, build practical skills, and feel supported in applying strategies at home.

It is included as part of your child's ABA therapy program but is also available as a separate service.

Funding & Logistics

  • Yes, ABA services may be covered through Ontario Autism Program funding as part of the core clinical services, but families need to wait to receive core clinical services funding. Families are responsible for managing their funding and selecting services that best meet their needs.

  • Billing practices can be discussed during the consultation process. You will receive clear information about rates, invoicing, and documentation for reimbursement if applicable.

  • Services are primarily offered in your home.

School-based services may be an option, based on your child’s needs and availability.

This allows therapy to be integrated into your child’s daily routines and environment.

  • Service areas can be confirmed during your inquiry, depending on availability and location. Sam I Am Autism Services provides home-based ABA therapy across Northumberland County and surrounding communities, including: Cobourg, Port Hope, Brighton, Trenton, Newcastle, Bowmanville, and Oshawa.

Practical Considerations

  • Session frequency depends on your child’s needs, goals, and your family’s schedule. Some families prefer a few sessions per week, while others choose more intensive support.

  • Services are typically offered for children between the ages of 2 to 13, with programs adapted to each stage of development.

  • Support is tailored to meet each child where they are. Programs are designed with flexibility and care, taking into account communication styles, behaviours, and individual challenges.
